Before we know it, school will be out for summer. For most of us, summer is the season of smiles and fun, but it’s a particularly challenging time for families already struggling to make ends meet. Kids are out of school and not getting the benefit of free and reduced lunch programs offered by school districts.

Sadly, many children in the communities we serve will go without meals and experience hunger during the upcoming months. Thankfully, neighborhoods and businesses can be a part of the solution by partnering with local food banks to provide assistance to those in greatest need.

That’s why we’re hosting our annual bank-wide food drive until April 30. The annual collection assists food banks and meal-assistance programs stock their shelves before children are out of school for summer.

Unfortunately, hunger is a very real issue in every community across the nation. Kids of all ages across the West- from southern California to north Idaho – are living without a basic necessity. Nearly 21 percent of U.S. children live in poverty. According to the USDA, even mild under nutrition experienced by young children during critical periods of growth impacts their behavior, school performance and overall cognitive development.

AmericanWest Bank employees are once again partnering with customers, area businesses, community organizations and even local schools to lead the charge in collecting donations for this important cause. All donations - food and cash- stay in the community where it was donated.

Please consider making a food or cash donation at any AmericanWest Bank now until April 30. Together we can make a difference!
